Kids Vision Serious disorders in children’s vision can be hidden from parents, and permanent sight loss can be the tragic result. Yet nearly 80% of preschool children do not receive vision
screening, and for all children, back-to-school medical examinations can fail to include adequate
tests to detect vision problems. One in four school-age children has a vision problem, and one-in two
childen ages 3-5 has a vision problem that could lead to blindness.
Research shows that vision develops very rapidly during the first year of life. Therefore
problems must be detected and treated early. Other problems can develop when vision disorders
are undetected and left untreated. Speech development and motor skills can suffer when impaired
vision prevents a child from seeing objects moving toward them, and reach for them to them to learn their
names.
The South Daytona Lion’s Club has purchased an MTI Photoscreener that can take an instant
photo of you children’s eye to detect various problems in children 6 months old to school age. The
holographs and their associated light reflex can be evaluated to screen for lazy eyes,
nearsightedness, farsightedness, astigmatism, or diseases obscuring vision. The Photoscreener
can be used before a child can recognize symbols, letters, or numbers. It is fast, easy, and
painless. There is no need for eyedrops. Our staff works with the Lions to determine whether you
child might be at risk for certain vision problems.
